During Hajj and ‘Umrah, Muslims are commanded to perform Sa‘i — the walking (or brisk walking) between the two blessed hills of Ṣafā and Marwah. This sacred ritual commemorates the devotion of Hājar (Hagar), the wife of Prophet Ibrāhīm (A.S.), who ran between these hills in search of water for her infant son Ismā‘īl (A.S.). In response to her unwavering faith, Allah caused the blessed Zamzam spring to flow beneath the feet of her child.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself performed Sa‘i seven times between Ṣafā and Marwah. He walked at a normal pace, but between the two markers (green posts) in the valley area, he would run briskly.
